Many of these trees were removed due to disease. I know the owner of the property. And as a contractor said to me once, "there are plenty of trees in Northern Michigan"... that being said, it was lumbered to almost nudity back in the late 1800s and early 1900s! Now there is a lot of preservation going on and the timber men go through and cut some but not all the trees.
disease is a perfect reason to harvest, and selective harvesting is good. (i just reacted, seeing the stack of trees & not knowing the situation/story...) lol we've been having trouble in colorado with beetle kill.... a lot is wiped out!
I understand. I'm a total tree hugger! I hate seeing trees cut down and have never allowed it on any property I have control of. My brother in law cut down a gorgeous tree at our cottages so he could have a better view of the lake from the deck. OMG! I was so mad at him. He didn't even ask permission!
I would feel the same way except I saw the whole scene... there was just a few of the trees on the property. And as the owner told me they were mostly ash and beech which have been diseased in recent years. It's sad but I hope they grow back healthy.
